The new president elect, Joyce Banda’s budget speech was by any standard impressive. Whilst quoting Luther King’s Dream speech, she promised to balance the books, revitalise the flat- lined economy, address the meagre health and education provision, whilst stimulating growth and imposing austerity. The offer to sell the former leader’s presidential jet and to shrink her motor-cade a tad is a commendable start, but devaluating the already impoverished Kwacha by 42% overnight has only micro-dented the national debt whilst inflicting pricing chaos on the ground. An effective instant panic 50% increase in basic commodities has slapped the poorest in a way that even her so-called prophet friend, TB Joshua failed to see.
