Lilongwe International Airport has few redeeming features apart from the lack of aircraft and someone’s misapprehension that we are important enough to be met by the aircraft’s ladder in a Mercedes sedan and herded through the presidential suite. The suite boasts an upgrade to the latest immigration finger print scanning technology. The battleship grey melamine laminated twin ultra-modern Ikea-esque booths have landed square in the middle of the heavy dark wood framed sofas and industrial lined dusty dated drapes, jarring the colonial with the contemporary in a way that only Africa can.
The moment of honouring was of course short lived due to the traditionally late arrival of our land transport. Politely but firmly asked to vacate to the surrounding turf as the suite was required for President Joyce’s imminent departure.
