Mama’s Nest

The invitation into Mama’s day care centre caught me momentarily off guard as it was cleverly disguised as her tiny, mud and stick, one roomed home. Mama (of indeterminate years) had spotted a business opportunity to care for Kibera’s working mum’s toddlers. The alternative of leaving them locked home-alone was too much for Mama so she charged the equivalent of 8 pence per day per child and quickly realised that this did not cover their daily feeding needs. When quizzed on this business anathema Mama replied from somewhere beneath a pile of eight big brown eyed youngsters that she always found a way, although it was a bit more difficult when she looked after thirty.
